Many of the Nations that currently exist on Newsvine were tranferred over from the old Newsvine when the 2013 change took place. Some of these Nations were already dead before they crossed over to the upgraded Newsvine
There are many Nations that have inactive administrators...some haven't been on the Vine since 2010!! Sometimes these Nations are still kept active by members who are still contributing articles/seeds. But sometimes there's no activity at all. These Nations are dead. If you try to join one of these Nations...you will never be accepted because no one is home.
Now it's true that a member of the Nation can invite you and you can get in that way...but that involves contacting someone from the Nation and requesting that they invite you...Many members won't accept someone they don't know from Adam...so it's who you know in this case...
There are also many Nations out there that do not get exposure because they are not on the "Master List". If I go to "Manage/Find" in the Nation section...I should be able to type in the word...say "Egyptian"...and EVERY Nation with that word in the title should pop up...and it doesn't. I know this because I have a Nation with "Egyptian" in its title...
I've discovered some good Nations just because I saw it on someone's main page. Did you know that there is a group dedicated to "Dr. Who" or "The Walking Dead"?? You won't find it on the Nation tracker...that's too bad...because there are people who'd love to join...but they can't do that if the Nation is invisable.
My thoughts are as follows:
If there is a Nation with no active Administrator, but the Nation still appears to be active...perhaps the Moderators can "appoint" or "request" an active member from that Nation be appointed Administrator...or ask someone to volunteer as I realize that everyone does not want to be an Administrator.
If a Nation is not active at all...maybe an attempt can be made to contact the Administrator...and if there is no response (which there probably won't be) then the Nation should be closed. Some people belong to Nations that are no longer active...and all that is doing is preventing them from joining another Nation if they're already at their 15 Nation limitation.
What I'm saying is that some housekeeping needs to be done here...first pronounce the Nations dead that already are and bury them. Allow currently existing Nations to all be on the "Master List" so they are available for all to see...there are many new Nations out there that aren't getting the exposure that they need to attract members.
If the concept of Nations is to suceed...I think we need to bury the dead and promote the living.
